About Andrographis
Andrographis paniculata, scientifically known as Andrographis paniculata, is a species of medicinal plant that grows in South Asia. It is a one-year-old shrub native to the Indian subcontinent, reaching a height of up to 1 meter. Its stems are smooth and without cracks, and its leaves are simple and opposite. In many countries, products containing this herbal plant are used to treat respiratory infections and inflammatory conditions. Extracts and powders of the Andrographis plant are used in the treatment of various diseases, including symptoms of the common cold.
The medicinal part of this plant is its aerial parts, and the leaves and stems of the Andrographis plant contain active compounds known as andrographolides. Studies have shown that andrographolides extracted from the leaves and stems have anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. They increase phagocytosis and stimulate specific and non-specific immune responses. Diterpenes and flavonoids are among the other main compounds of this herbal plant.
Properties
Traditional Medicine Use
This plant is used orally to prevent and treat the common cold, influenza, mood disorders, tonsillar swelling, allergies, and sinusitis. Traditionally, this plant has been used to treat many diseases, including anorexia, varicose veins, insect bites and snakebites, bronchitis, prevention of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, high blood pressure, and dysentery.
Therapeutic Effects
One of the most important applications of Andrographis supplements is in relieving symptoms of the common cold and other respiratory infections such as cough and sore throat. Although no study has conclusively proven its effect in reducing the duration of the common cold. Clinical studies with the use of Andrographis in the early stages of the common cold have shown a reduction in the severity and duration of symptoms compared to a placebo.
A study in 2021 showed that after 30 days of supplementation, 21 out of 30 healthy adults who consumed Andrographis experienced an increase in the number of immune cells, especially T cells. These results suggest that the immune system can respond more quickly to potential diseases and infections such as the common cold with the consumption of Andrographis. Another study in 2020 showed that andrographolide, the active compound in Andrographis, increases the production of white blood cells by up to 14%, which helps in fighting infections and other diseases.
Supplements containing Andrographis are derived from its active herbal compound, which is andrographolide. The medicinal use of these plants originates from Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine. In addition, this plant is sometimes used to alleviate inflammatory conditions such as osteoarthritis. In 1919, during the influenza outbreak in India, researchers found that high doses of Andrographis were as effective as paracetamol (acetaminophen) in relieving inflammatory symptoms of tonsillitis for three days.
As mentioned, Andrographis also has anti-inflammatory properties. Researchers believe that this compound suppresses body inflammation by reducing the number and levels of cytokines, which cause inflammation in the affected areas. It is also believed to be effective in reducing symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, a disease caused by joint inflammation.
Other Medicinal Uses
Research indicates that Andrographis is also effective in treating the following conditions:
Osteoarthritis
A study in 2019 showed that supplementation of andrographolide for 28 days was highly effective in reducing knee joint pain in individuals with mild to moderate osteoarthritis.
Ulcerative colitis
The anti-inflammatory properties of this plant significantly reduce the inflammatory proteins responsible for colitis.
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA)
Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease. The anti-inflammatory effects of Andrographis prevent immune cells from attacking the joints. With further research, Andrographis supplements may be recognized as an adjunct treatment for rheumatoid arthritis.
Hepatitis C
This plant can be very helpful in protecting the liver during hepatitis C infection. Andrographolide, the active compound in Andrographis, can be effective in reducing the number of hepatitis C viruses.
Please note that while Andrographis shows promise in these areas, further research is needed to fully understand its effectiveness and determine appropriate dosages for specific conditions. It is always recommended to consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new herbal supplements or treatments.
